Two years ago, I started photographing my personal project God Is A Stripper. I spent countless hours in strip clubs and in strippers’ homes. For me, the club is a paradox where something that feels transcendent—this sexual, sacred saint of a woman—meets a very literal transaction. Yet I always wondered what their lives looked like outside the club’s four walls. These girls live in two worlds. In the club, she’s a performer. At home, she is a dreamer. Here they tell their own stories, glimpses of the universes they’ve crafted for themselves out of big dreams and even greater drive. I hope you see these women not as objects at your disposal, as they’re often seen, but as the stunning, smart, and incredibly hardworking individuals that they are. I had the honor to interview some of the girls for an exclusive feature on i-D.
